Our Dream Team
Marco Joubert - Senior Rider
- Born in 1997
- Professional Athlete since 2016
- 178cm
- 68kg’s
- Words to live by: Exploring the world on two wheels - always seeking adventure
Marco’s dad introduced him to Mountain biking at a very young age. Seeing how riders push themselves, their bikes and their minds to the limit triggered his passion for the sport. A few of Marco’s goals for this season are to finish in the Top 10 of the ABSA Cape Epic and win the African jersey, to win SA marathon Champs and represent SA at the World Marathon Champs and to win the Imbuko Big 5 MTB Challenge. When the hill seems never-ending Marco tells himself “If it was easy everyone would do it” – The harder the obstacle the stronger the outcome. Tough times never last! Marco compares himself to the Lion in the Imbuko logo: he is strong, courageous, aggressive, predictable, and dependable – King of the jungle.

- Words to live by: "Persevere, because everyone regrets giving up.”
I started cycling at the age of 12 when my brother got into the sport and I thought it seemed like a good idea. Fast forward many years and after being retrenched from my position as a Projects Engineer at Exxaro, I took up the sport full time with hopes and aspirations of making it work and here I am 6 years later. Guess I made it work.

I got into cycling through the Spur school series. After my first race, the bug bit me and I was hooked. And since then I haven't stopped enjoying the sport.

Franko van Zyl - Junior Rider
- Born in 2001
- New young and upcoming rider
- 180 cm
- 72 kg’s
- Words to live by: Live and let Live!
Franko was an avid rugby player, but injuries forced him to hang up his boots. Being a committed sportsman, he was eager to start a new and challenging adventure. With his father being a big mountain bike enthusiast, it did not take long for Franco to hop onto the saddle and endeavour the single tracks with his dad. From there he fell in love with the sport and decided to give it his full commitment. Franko is motivated to finish the steep and never-ending climb by the relief of the downhill on the other side! As a brand-new rider, Franko set out 2021 to gain experience with the goal to eventually ride in the front with the big guys! He sees himself as the Buffalo in the Imbuko logo - when cows run away from the storm, the Buffalo charges towards it and gets through quicker. Whenever he is confronted with tough challenges, he does not prolong the torment, he becomes the Buffalo…

Rudi loves nature and exploring new places and cycling has always been a great way for him to explore and have fun! Since his been competing in races and cycling every day he has become more addicted to the sport and the absolute joy it brings him! When the hill gets steep it is his never-give-up mentality and his love for cycling that keeps him going to the top. This year his goal is to learn from the other riders in the Imbuko Giant team. As a new rider he would like to focus on improving all aspects of his cycling. Rudi sees himself as the Leopard in the Imbuko logo. A Leopard usually looks very calm and relaxed, but when it is time to hunt, they are strong, fast and dangerous!

My cycling journey all started as a kid riding around with friends and having my first real sense of freedom and adventure. This is what got me into the sport and to this day is what keeps me motivated and excited to ride my bike. It was only in high school that I was introduced to racing and I have been obsessed with bettering myself and my performance ever since. My current goals have shifted to marathons and stage racing. The main goals are a top 3 overall finish at the Absa Cape Epic and winning SA Marathon Champs.

My dad deserves the kudos for getting me into the sport of mountain biking and cycling in general. I have always been an avid sports player and when my dad first asked me to join for a ride way back in my early teens, I was naturally keen to try it out.
It was maybe a year or so of just fun, casual rides with the Potchefstroom “ooms” when we decided to enter me for a local race. It went well, and one can kinda say that that’s when the bug bit! From that moment onwards I decided to leave my school sports to focus more on cycling, as well as investing in proper gear, training programs, etc.
And so the rest is history: a few years later I am honoured to have worked my way up from an avid cyclist, to being a part of a professional team and being able to call myself a “pro cyclist”. I’ve been given the chance to live out my passion as my job and I feel very privileged to do so.
